Reading Reflection No.1

Reading Reflection No.1

I read Coco Chanel: An Intimate Life by Lisa Chaney for my first read. I chose this novel because I love fashion and in just about every fashion capital of the world you can find a Chanel store. I wanted to become knowledgeable of the person, designer and entrepreneur behind the ever so monumental brand. I have to say what surprised me the most was the adversity she overcame and how the rags to riches story plays near and dear to Chanel’s heart. From what Chaney portrays it seems as if Chanel proving herself to the world was one of her main goals, not just as a designer but as a human as well. Chanel’s persona was what I admired the most for she wanted the person to be seen first and foremost, not the materialistic things. However, what she could never seem to get away from was scandals and drama with men, which in my opinion was what I least admired, for at times I feel like it distracted her from her work.
I think the reminder of what Chanel didn’t have growing up drove her to be one of the most influential fashion icons of the 20th century. She overcame this obstacle of having nothing and making a name for herself, for her past was something she could never forget. Hard work, admiration of art, and fearlessness is what I saw most in Chaney’s description of Chanel. She knew when to expand her business and how to take advantage of the market; a good business-women some would say. My questions for Chanel would revolve around when you know to improve your business and when to build off of it; basically revolving around the timing moves for a company.
Overall, I believe Chanel’s opinion of hard work would be to strive for what you want no matter the circumstance because someone has had it worse than you. Since Chanel came from nothing and it was a constant reminder, there is always a desire to want to do and be more.
