The final novel
I chose was ‘Mindset: The New Psychology of Success’ by Carol Dweck. The reoccurring
theme throughout he novel is that from the two mindsets presented, there are
behavior traits associated with them. These mindsets followed along with traits
are ones that can alter someone’s life. The most important note however is that
these mindsets are ones that an individual chooses to have.
The first mindset
is a fixed mindset, where they accept ideas of predetermined abilities and
traits that can either be enhanced or not; those with this mindset are quick to
give up and avoid a challenge. The second is a growth mindset, where they believe
those traits are not fixed and growth and change can take place throughout time;
this mindset is the go getter and will go through the motions not afraid of failure.
I believe assignment 26A tied in with this idea of failure and how we view it.
Failure is a different definition in everyone’s book, because everyone has
different goals. Therefore, I believe that an assignment that can be incorporated
into the curriculum for the next set of students is to test what kind of mindset
they have, based on the responses received on the previous assignment. If the students
responded negatively towards failure they would be categorized as a fixed
mindset, if they had positive connotations towards failure then they have a
growth mindset. After students have received the mindset they fell under, there
will be a follow up assignment claiming if they are okay with being categorized
as such. If they are they will say why and how it benefits them, if they are
not they will say how they believe they can learn to become a growth mindset
and how it will benefit their future.
The biggest
surprise for me is the novel was that these mindsets are up to us to choose
from. We determine how we take on life every day and how we analyze the events
that occur to us throughout them. We can render them positive or negative, we
can take criticism well or act like our work is perfect. At times our attitudes
hinder us from taking amazing opportunities and in the long run will make us
not be as successful as we could be. It is true when they say we are the
captain of our own lives, for we are not in control of the life we have, but in
control of the life we live.
Hey Melody,
ReplyDeleteI did not choose this reading as one of my own during the course of this semester, but I wish I did. I think you did a great job reflecting what the novel was trying to portray and it seems like a very interesting topic. I like how you distinguished from the fixed mindset and the growth mindset. This has allowed me to analyze what the reading was about and how the two mind sets differ. Great job!
Melody,
ReplyDeleteThis was a great post. I find the idea of us being able to choose our mindset to be fascinating. Many people do not categorize themselves and in my opinion this can be a bit of a disadvantage. If they are unable to know or accept their mindset they can not work on themselves in order to try and improve their thinking process. This makes them more stagnant and unable to adjust to what they need to adjust to. Great post.
Hello Melody,
ReplyDeleteGreat reading reflection! I did not choose this book as my reading, but i really enjoyed your summary. The two mindsets are very interesting to think about. I like how we are able to choose them in the novel it gives you the ability to perceive things differently.
